So You Want to Be a Photographer? My Advice for Aspiring Creatives
Let’s talk about it — the dream, the passion, the spark that’s got you thinking, “I want to be a photographer.” Maybe it's the way golden hour kisses the horizon, or how a simple candid shot can tell an entire story without saying a word. Whatever pulled you into this world of capturing moments — welcome. You belong here.
Why am I writing this? Because I’ve been exactly where you are. I was the kid who picked up a camera at 10 years old, mesmerized by the way I could freeze time with just one click. What started as a curiosity and a simple hobby became a side hustle by 2015. As a young mama of 2 girls, I was eager to find a way to bring in some extra income all while doing something that I truly loved. By 2019 I went in full force and took my business seriously. Here we are now in 2025 & I am living the full-time photographer dream Photographing so many amazing people each week, leading groups of creatives, & spending so much quality time with my 3 children. But let me tell you — it didn’t happen overnight. It took passion, yes, but also a whole lot of learning, trial and error, and an unshakable belief in myself (even when it felt like I was the only one who believed).
So, if you're an aspiring photographer wondering how to turn your creative spark into a flame, I’m here to help. Let’s break it down step by step.
Define Your “Why” Photography isn’t just about taking pretty pictures — it’s about telling stories, evoking emotion, and creating art. Ask yourself: Why do I want to do this? Understanding your “why” will guide every decision you make, from the types of sessions you shoot to the way you build your brand.
Start Shooting — Right Now Don’t wait for the “perfect” camera, the dream studio, or the big break. Start with whatever you have — even if it’s just your phone. The key is to practice. Photograph everything and everyone. Experiment with angles, lighting, and composition. Your style will start to emerge the more you create.
Learn the Craft (But Don’t Get Stuck in Perfectionism) There’s no shortcut to mastering photography. Dive into online courses, YouTube tutorials, and books about lighting, editing, and posing. BUT — don’t get so caught up in learning that you forget to create. The best way to grow is by doing.
Find Your Niche (But Stay Open) Do you love photographing families? Weddings? Editorial work? Personal branding? It’s okay if you don’t know yet. Explore different genres and see what lights you up. Over time, you’ll find your sweet spot — the style and subject that make you feel alive.
Build a Portfolio You’re Proud Of Your portfolio is your visual resume. Start small — offer free or discounted sessions for friends and family. Focus on quality over quantity. Showcase only the work that reflects the type of clients you want to attract.
Create an Online Presence In today’s world, your online presence is everything. Build a simple website (or use platforms like Instagram) to showcase your work. Share your story, your passion, and your unique approach to photography. People don’t just buy photos — they buy into YOU.
Network and Collaborate Photography isn’t a solo journey. Connect with other creatives — makeup artists, stylists, models, and local businesses. Collaboration not only grows your portfolio but also expands your reach and reputation.
Invest in Yourself As you grow, reinvest in your craft. Upgrade your gear when you can, attend workshops, and seek mentorship from photographers you admire. The more you pour into your passion, the more it will pour back into you.
Set Realistic Goals Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a photography career. Set short-term goals (like booking your first paid session) and long-term goals (like launching your own studio). Celebrate the small wins — they build the momentum for the big ones.
Stay Inspired and Keep Creating The creative journey has its highs and lows. There will be days when self-doubt creeps in — push through. Stay inspired by following artists you love, attending art shows, and taking personal creative days where you shoot just for YOU.
How This Helps You: This journey is yours — but you’re not alone. These steps are designed to help you build not just a career, but a sustainable, fulfilling life as a photographer. I’m giving you the map, but the road? That’s all yours to walk.
